Character Loyalty & Attitude

Loyalty

The Loyalty of all the various characters in your personal Organization is something of paramount importance to any rising Boss. This is a hidden rating for each character in your employ, although you can often make a pretty good guess based on the various loyalty-affecting factors mentioned below. Every character's Loyalty is mainly determined by a combination of his Morals (one of the ten Characteristics), his current Attitude (see below) at any time, and his own Rank within your Organization. To this might also be applied any number of smaller, but no less important, factors, some of which will be obvious and some not so obvious. Obvious ones include such as the Leadership Qualities of the character to whom he pays tribute (his immediate boss); any inducements or threats being offered by rivals; and any additional stress placed upon this character, such as when finding himself facing a long prison sentence, being offered a huge bribe to betray you, or when being tortured by rivals. During the course of the game many characters will for a variety of reasons face an occasional 'loyalty check'. This is literally to check whether or not this character remains loyal to you, the Boss, given his current situation. What happens should he fail the loyalty check will depend on his current circumstances and his personal Characteristics. For example, if facing a long sentence he may try to cut a deal with the authorities and agree to testify against other members of your gang, in return for a lighter sentence or immunity from prosecution; if being tortured by rivals, he might blurt out everything he knows about your gang just to be killed quickly and have the terrible agony finally be over. Although you cannot change any character's Morals (or any other of his personal Characteristics, for that matter), you do have the ability to control most of the other factors considered during a 'loyalty check', especially a character's current Attitude at any time.

Attitude

The Attitude of a Character is the only real indication you have of how happy and / or Loyal he might be. This will be indicated by a single descriptive word for each character in your organization (as below) though it should be borne in mind that this is only a guideline and can never be completely relied on to be accurate. More importantly, some characters will also be very good actors and will use this skill if they have something to hide... The various Attitude descriptions are as follows: 1 - Unhappy 2 - Sullen 3 - Disgruntled 4 - Discontented 5 - Apathetic 6 - Satisfied 7 - Content 8 - Cheerful 9 - Happy The attitude of a character is very important in certain situations, for instance where he might be forced to choose between remaining loyal or becoming disloyal; when deciding whether or not to take the risks which your current Orders might be placing him in; and even how long he will stay & fight should a current brawl or gunfight be going badly for him & his men. Although there are many, the two main factors affecting a character's Attitude are how much money he is personally making, and how much Free Time he is allowed each week in which to enjoy spending this money. Each character will hold you, his Boss, personally responsible for both of these factors, but some characters will naturally remain more loyal & trustworthy than others, and some will simply not ever be very reliable at all, in any way. In the reeking cesspool that is the criminal underworld, do not underestimate the value of loyalty - nor the dangers of disloyalty.
