City Overview

Every game of Vendetta takes place in a procedurally generated map of a 1920's American city inspired by New York City and Chicago.

The rationale for taking a procedurally generated route rather than having a single static map is for maximum replayability. Knowing you are starting in a new city that must be explored reinforces that exciting sandbox feel. It is a new city for your Personal Character to leave his mark upon.

City Design

A generated city in Vendetta is comprised of Wards, Block Areas, and City Blocks. A city contains 25 Wards. Each Ward contains nine 'Block Areas' (in a 3x3 layout), and each Block Area contains nine City Blocks (also in a 3x3 layout), so each Ward contains a total of 81 City Blocks.

Wards

New York City was divided into wards between 1683 and 1938. These were used for the election of various municipal offices, and would later be used to construct the boundaries of larger electoral districts. Prior to the formation of the so-called City of Greater New York in 1898, what is now New York City comprised multiple municipalities that had different histories with wards. Still to this day, Chicago is divided into 50 wards.

In Vendetta's 1920's setting, it therefore makes sense to first use wards to divide the map.

Block Areas

City Blocks

A City Block can contain a mixture of commercial businesses, residences, industrial shops and businesses, and municipal buildings. There are over 200 types of businesses available. Generally, cities will have buildings of the same type within a city block, and also to some degree within a Block Area. This is to mimic real life cities in which neighborhoods generally follow district zoning guidelines. For example, you may find a mixture of residential buildings and commercial buildings on the same city block, but you likely wouldn't see industrial buildings on the same city block as an apartment building.

These businesses have the potential to operate as a Front for illegal businesses known as Rackets.
